If you haven’t yet read, Man’s Search for Meaning, by Viktor E. Frankl, I highly recommend it. Written shortly after the conclusion of World War II, it documents the authors journey through four different concentration camps and what made the difference between one surviving the experience and one perishing. Though many were not given a choice to choose life or death, even some who were, perished anyway because they lost this one driving force. They lost hope! As Frankl put it, quoting Friedrich Nietzsche (1844-1900) “He who has a why to live can bear almost any how.”
As we look around today we see a multitude of people struggling to find meaning in this world. I must admit, even though I have a much stronger sense of meaning than I once did, having just turned 60 this past fall, I find myself revisiting the question from time to time as well. What does it all mean? Who am I and why am I here?
The answer is right under our noses and, the best part is it is available to all who will accept it. And that answer is Jesus Christ.
This is what the Lord says: “Stand at the crossroads and look; ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it, and you will find rest for your souls. But you said, ‘We will not walk in it.’
